Ben Howland and his Mississippi State staff added a top fifty prospect when 6-1 point guard Nick Weatherspoon from Jackson, MS Velma Johnson Magnet School decided to join his brother Quinndary, an All-SEC freshman last season, and become a future Bulldog. He announced his decision via twitter:
“I have committed to Mississippi State University!” #hailstate
He chose Mississippi State over heavyweights like Kentucky, Kansas, and North Carolina, but the chance to play with his brother overcame the fact that the biggies were calling.
Weatherspoon is one of the top floor leaders in the 2017 class, and proved it all spring and summer against top notch competition. He tore up the Adidas Gauntlet tour averaging 23.4 points while hitting 38% from beyond the arc, and handing out almost four assists a game. But, for us it was his explosive quicks, aggressive style on both ends and his ability to see and deliver the rock to open teammates that made him special. That tough, hard nosed style will make him a favorite with Coach Howland from day one!
He is the first commitment for the Bulldogs this fall as they follow up a top five class from a year ago. The key for Coach Howland has been local recruiting and Weatherspoon, like Malik Newman was a huge get as they continue to build the program in Starkville.
