We were all over the country this spring getting a good look at the nation’s top rising senior talent in the Class of 2018, so as we get ready to enter the 2017 Summer evaluation period it’s time once again to update our national rankings for the Class of 2018. Make no mistake about it, the top talent in the class is 6’10 power forward Marvin Bagley from Chatsworth, CA Sierra Canyon High. He has all the tools to be a face up four in time at the NBA level, especially once he adds physical maturity and improves the consistency of his long range jump shot. He is a good shooter now, with the ability to attack the rim off the dribble who can score in variety of ways. He draws comparisons to Kevin Durant with his length quickness and bounce. But, isn’t the shooter that Durant was at this point of his development, although he is stronger and a better finisher as a junior in high school than Durant.
Right behind him is a physical man child who has been tearing it up since last summer in 6’7 235-pound Zion Williamson who reminds me in many ways of another Williamson, that being former Arkansas All-American and 12-year NBA talent Corliss “Big Nasty” Williamson! Like Big Nasty he dominates the glass on both ends, makes plays, and flat out destroys opponents one-on-one. He has improved his jumper and is becoming a match-up nightmare for opponents. Behind our power duo, at No.3 nationally, is in 6’6 Cameron Reddish from Westtown, PA Westtown School. He has all the tools to take it off the glass, run the break, and either finish in traffic or make pass to open man in transition. He can knock down three to keep defense honest and can flat out break down opponents off the dribble and create with his triple threat skills. Breaking into the top five this spring is the Co-MVP of the NBPA top 100 Camp 6’8 combo forward Simisola Shittu, a true throwback type forward in the Michael Gilchrist mold who flat out just outworks just about everyone on both ends of the court. He is a better mid-range shooter at this stage than Gilchrist and could develop into a lottery pick over the next 18 months! Rounding out the top five is sweet shooting 6’4 wing scorer Romeo Langford who can flat out fill it up from three or make highlights off the dribble at the rim. He tore it up last summer and put up big numbers this spring too! He is in a battle with Reddish for the top guard spot in the class.
Heading our second five is a fast-rising power forward in 6’10 Jordan Brown from Roseville, CA Woodcreek High. He is an explosive rebounding who uses his length to control boards and make big plays on defense. But, it has been the development of his offensive game, especially facing the hoop out of the high post that has the put him in the hunt for a top five spot. Right behind him is another athletic big man who showed his ability to dominate the paint at the Pangos All-American Camp in 7’1 Moses Brown from Queens, NY Archbishop Molloy. He can block shots and control the glass with his length, and with added strength could crack the top five over the winter. Rounding out the final three spots in our top ten are explosive 6’1 floor leader 6-1 Darius Garland from Nashville Brentwood Academy. He has a great first step and sees the open man as well as anyone in the glass. Coming in at No.9 is another newcomer to the top ten in 6-4 power guard Keldon Johnson from Huntington, WV Prep. He was a terror at the NBPA Top 100 Camp scoring from three and in traffic at the rim! Rounding out the top ten is 7’0 face-up four man Bol Bol who impressed us in the spring with his range use of length and head to head play versus Marvin Bagley. But, alas, he struggled versus wide bodied competition at the Pangos and gave us reason to question whether he is a top five talent as many believe. SO we will take a wait and see attitude, but reward him with a top ten spot heading into the summer.
But, no one in the top ten should rest on their laurels as there are a number of fast rising talents that will be looking to take those spots away with their play on the circuit this summer. So, as is usually the case as we enter the second evaluation period during the month of July, we will see a number of players explode and challenge for top ten spots. With that in mind, here is how we see the nation’s top rising seniors heading into the summer evaluation period., as we take a look at the FutureStars Class of 2018 Pre-Summer Top 100+ talents:
