Dave Rice and his UNLV staff added a big-time piece to the puzzle for next year with the signing of 7-foot post man, Stephen Zimmerman, our No.8 rated senior, from Las Vegas Bishop Gorman High. He announced his decision via twitter on Thursday evening.
“Thx 2 all the programs & fans that supported me. This is MY decision & I’ve decided 2 stay home & attend #UNLV” @BIGG_ZIMM #LetsRun #Vegas
Zimmerman picked the Rebels over Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA and Arizona.
Make no mistake about it, this was a huge get for UNLV as Zimmerman has all the tools to make their frontline one of the best in the country next year, especially if Christian Wood decides tio return, they will have a great inside out offensive duo. Add in Goodluck Okonoboh, Dwayne Morgan, and Transfer Ben Carter and the Rebs are deep and long on the inside.
Look for Zimmerman to be a key piece to making that combination work for the Rebels with his versatility and ability to score with his length on the blocks, pass out of the post or facing, and range that extends to the three-point arc. He is a solid rebounder and shot blocker who gives Coach Rice the flexibility to go with a number of looks up front. He is extrememly mobile and can in short stretches even guard on the wing or top of the zone, as we have seen on number of occasions when Bishop Gorman went to their three big game that featured Big Zimm, 6-9 Duke signee Chase Jeter, and 6-11 Gonzaga commit Zach Collins. So he will be familiar with his role in that kind of rotation when the Rebels decide to go with that look.
The only unfortunate thing for the Rebel fans may be the length of time that he remains in school, as many project him as a one and done talent as he enters college. But, that is a decision for a year from now, at this point fans of the Runnin’ Rebels have got to be excited about next year’s squad, especially if they can add Nigel Williams-Goss (Washington transfer) to the fold this spring.
