Make no mistake about it, Tom Izzo just got an opportunity to head to another Final Four next year as his top player, and projected lottery pick, 6-8 Miles Bridges has decided to head back to college and forego the 2017 NBA draft!
“I got some unfinished business here,” he told a huge crowd on campus last night in East Lansing. “I want to stay.
I’d rather stay here and continue to get better!”
Bridges who averaged 16.9 points (best since Magic) and 8.3 rebounds (Greg Kelser) a game as a freshman showing a game that reminds us in many ways to Draymond Green (Current Golden State Warrior & former Spartan) with his ability to knock down perimeter jumper or roll to blocks and score over or around bigs at the rim. He even is a better ball handler in the open court or face and go, so we see his further development as a plus, that will put him ahead of Green’s power curve coming out next year after taking a shot at making a final four or winning a national title with the Spartans!
His decision was a pleasant surprise for Coach Tom Izzo who thought Miles would head to the NBA.
“Most of the year, I thought he was going and assumed he would go,” Izzo said. “He felt he wasn’t ready and didn’t want to do it (Enter the Draft).”
He will be the key piece in a final four run being joined by returnees 6-9 Nick Ward, 6-9 senior Gavin Schilling (coming off injury), the starting back court of 6-0 Cassius Winston and 6-4 Josh Langford, along signees with 6-11 McDonald’s All-American Jaren Jackson, and power man 6-8 270-pound Xavier Tillman. In addition, they could get 6-10 Ben Carter (petitioned for 6th year after injury) or add another late signee in 6-4 point guard Mark Smith out of Edwardsville, IL or 7-0 McDonald’s All-American Brandon McCoy from San Diego, CA!
In total the Spartans return 8 of their top 10 from their NCAA squad from this past year! But, Bridges return gives them that special piece capable of taking over when the game is on the line that is so necessary to make that run to the Final Four!
