The nation’s No.1 high school senior in our eyes, 6’11 260-pound, Vernon Carey from Fort Lauderdale, FL University School, announced his college decision this morning on ESPN. He will keep the streak alive as another No.1 prospect is headed to….
“After a lot of consideration,” Vernon Carey said. “I’ll be attending Duke University, and will be joining the Brotherhood!”
He chose Duke over his other two finalists North Carolina and Michigan State.
Carey emerged as out top prospect based on his consistent play and ability to dominate in head to head match-ups with the top big men in the Nike EYBL. He has a game that combines the power of an Elton Brand with many of the perimeter skills of a Marcus Bagley! He can knock down trailing jumper or face and go to rim versus bigs or roll to the block and score with either hand around the hoop. He is a good passer and rebounds in and out of his zone. He has developed the ability to face and drive on other bigs that makes him a load to handle on the offensive end. He lost twenty pounds over the last year that gave him a real advantage on most of the bigs he faced stamina-wise when games were on the line. He continues to add to his game and because of that work ethic he emerged as the top player heading into the 2018-19 season in our rankings.
He gives Duke the top prospect in the class for the second year in a row…and fills one of the major spots that will be left open once Zion Williamson moves on to the NBA in next spring’s draft!
He joins 6’6 Wendell Moore and 6’2 Rejean “Boogie” Ellis in the Blue Devils Class of 2019!
