The Class of 2019 has had more changes at the top than any in recent memory with the last two number one rated talents moving on to college early in R.J. Barrett (Duke) and Charles Bassey (Western Kentucky) opting to re-class to the Class of 2018. But, it still has a quartet of intriguing talent that have jumped ahead of the rest this summer and will battle this winter for the top spot in the class in Vernon Carey, Jaden McDaniels, Cole Anthony, and James Wiseman.

Of that quartet, the talent who we head into the season in the number one spot with is 6’11 power forward Vernon Carey (pictured above). This powerful inside-out forward, can knock down trailing jumper or face and go to rim versus bigs or roll to the block and score with either hand around the hoop. He is a good passer and rebounds in and out of his zone. He was the most consistent performer of the top four and dominated in head to head match-ups with most of the top big men he faced. He will have to continue to show he can do it night in and night out, but he did it throughout the summer and has emerged in the top spot in our pre-season rankings!

Right behind him are the two top offensive performers of the summer, first the nation’s top guard, our #2 rated senior, in 6’3 combo guard Cole Anthony who led the Nike EYBL in scoring at their summer championships and has all the tools to play the point at the next two levels. He had his ups and downs, but when he was one he was a scoring machine. He has NBA range and is a good shooter who can flat out explode to the rim. Behind him in the #3 spot is the newcomer to the group, 6’10 long, lean, but mean Jaden McDaniels. He has a game styled after Kevin Durant, he loves to play on the perimeter, can knock down jumper well enough to keep defense honest, then attack the rim to make highlights. He can take over a game offensively and is a good rebounder and rim protector who can come from off the ball to swat shots. He needs to add strength, but that will come in time. Rounding the quartet vying for the top spot is our #4 rated prospect, 6’10 post man James Wiseman. He has been rated number one by a number of the scouts in the business, but that ranking may be more on what he could be, not on what he was when we saw him on three of the five occasions. He has the game that fits the pick and roll game of the NBA, but, may have to build his overall skill set to excel in college. He is an explosive athlete who can flat out throw it down catching off the roll or alley-oop, but really needs to build a post and pop or facing game to reach his full potential.  He is a good shot blocker and rebounder who sometimes shows more defensively that offensively. He will have a couple chances to show he belongs at the top here in December and January…we look forward to seeing him make his case!

The forgotten man in the top five is another of the nation’s talented group of bigs in 6’9 Isaiah Stewart a long and lanky big who can flat out dominate the glass, runs floor extremely well, and face, score with mid-range jumper or finish at rim with highlights. He will go against a national schedule at La Lumiere and will get his chances to prove he belong, not only in the top five, but for consideration for the top spot.

The second five is headed by two athletic, hardworking 6’9 bigs in shot blocker and rebounding machine Onyeka Okongwu, at #6, and skilled inside-out post forward Matthew Hurt holding down the #7 spot. Okongwu missed a lot of the summer due to injury, but, showed in the Fab 48 Tip Off Challenge that he flat out is the best low post defender and rebounder potentially in the class. He was the key piece to Chino Hills surprise run to the California State title last spring (without the Ball family). Hurt is a prototype face up four who can score facing or roll to block and finish through contact. He is an excellent passer and is a very efficient scorer. In the #8 spot is fast rising lead guard Tyrese Maxey. He has the tools to run the show at the next level, is an excellent passer who sets up penetration & kick with a solid jump shot and can score in traffic through contact. He is a solid defender who makes plays on both ends. Right behind him, at #9, is a smooth and skilled wing scorer in 6’7 Precious Achiuwa who can flat out score from three to the rim. He is long, has good quicks and explosion and has good vision and will deliver rock to open man if doubled up. Rounding out the top ten and just edging his high school teammate for the spot is 6’5 scoring guard Bryan Antoine. He is a big-time scorer who can knock down three and finish drives with highlights in traffic. He will make an impact on the offensive end at the next level from day one!

The overall quality of the class is still out for a verdict, but is talents like Scottie Lewis (Antoine’s teammate), Josh Green, Trendon Watford or a sleeper like Khalil Whitney or Jeremiah Robinson-Earl continue to rise and strengthen this top group the class may fall in the above average category, especially if the guard spots can continue to deepen.

So as is usually the case, as we enter the season we will see a number of additions and changes as talent develops and challenges for top spots in the class. So with that in mind, here is how we see the nation’s top rising juniors today, as we take a look at the FutureStars Class of 2019 Top 100+ talents:
